The German philosopher Alfred Schopenhauer once said, „All hair is of the animal. Shaving is a mark of higher civilisation.“ Perhaps that’s one reason why men and women now remove pubic hair routinely as part of their care regime.
In the old days women used scissors to trim their pubic hair, mostly for reasons of hygiene. This procedure had absolutely nothing to do with modern pubic shaving. Thanks to the hippie movement in the seventies, the natural ‘bush’ had a brief comeback as the look everybody wanted. But in the early nineties that hairy trend receded, and ‘less is more’ became the new credo in Germany’s bathrooms.
According to a poll by NIVEA, four out of five women under the age of thirty now shave their genitals. The problem is, pubic hair is almost twice as thick as the hair on arms or legs, and grows back much faster. That means you need to wet shave your genitals more often. Here’s how to avoid unpleasant shaving pimples, irritation and razor burn.
Whether and how much pubic hair you leave showing depends on your imagination, and that of your partner. Because along with from hygiene, sexual preferences are an important criterion when choosing the look you want.
There are lots of options to choose from. All off, just a trim ... or perhaps a bit of both? And what suits my style better – wet or dry shaving?
If you go for a clean shave, you’re wearing the Hollywood Cut that so many Hollywood stars prefer. That means removing all your pubic hair. Other names for this look are „Japanese“ oder „Brazilian“.
This means you only shave the edges of your pubic hair that would otherwise peek out of the sides of your bikini briefs.
This means a neatly trimmed triangle on your pubic bone. It’s basically a miniature version of your original pubic hair shape.
This is when all you leave is a narrow vertical strip. If the strip is wider (about as wide as two fingers), it’s a ‘Mohawk’ because it looks a punk hairstyle.
Pubic shaving for men is not as widespread yet. A clean shave is a „Manzilian“ or „Boyzilian“.
A „Brazilian Man“ is when you remove the hairs on your penis and scrotum, but leave the hairs above your penis untouched. A „Brazilian Hollywood Man“ is the same as a Hollywood Cut for the ladies, i.e., everything goes. A „Double Mohawk“ is the male version of a Landing Strip, only with two vertical strips (one to the left and right of your penis).
For men or for women, anything goes. The only limits are a lack of imagination, and bad tools.
Most men and women wet shave their genitals under the shower or in the bath, ideally at the same time they do their legs. Never shave against the direction of growth, otherwise the hairs will be too short and might become ingrown. That can cause shaving pimples, razor burn, pus-filled spots or even abscesses! It’s also important to change your razor blade regularly. Even if you follow all this advice, you can still get irritated skin or tiny pimples. If you do, use talcum powder to soothe the irritation, then baby oil, aloe vera gel or a mild aftershave lotion. Teatree oil and that great all- rounder zinc cream have also been known to ease the pain. And please – never use a product that contains alcohol.
Brazilian Waxing is an alternative to wet shaving. It hurts, but you stay smooth for longer. Electric shavers are better for less brave men and women. They are kinder to sensitive skin, you don’t need to be in the bathroom, and you can shave quickly whenever you wish.
